Spleen-Imaging

Spleen is an intraperitoneal organ located in the abdominal upper left quadrant. Two ligaments, the gastrosplenic and the splenorenal ligaments, keep the spleen in its normal anatomic position. The spleen can move around the abdomen without those ligamentous supports, a condition known as wandering spleen. The risk of torsion increases with a wandering spleen. The spleen consists of red as well as white tissue. The white pulp is the lymphoid tissue site, while the red pulp filters the blood, removing old or damaged red blood cells and pathogens. The plain abdominal radiograph has limited value for spleen evaluation. Some information from these studies may be gleaned, including the presence or absence of calcifications and the spleen size. In certain cases, as in tortuous calcified splenic artery aneurysm or rim calcified splenic artery, vascular calcifications are visible
