Laparoscopy is used to diagnose and identify the source of abdominal or pelvic pain. It is generally performed when noninvasive methods are not able to help with diagnosis. In several cases, abdominal issues or problems can also be diagnosed with imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scan and MRI scan. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the body. CT scan is a series of special X-rays that take cross-sectional images of the body. MRI scan uses radio waves and magnets to produce images of the body. Laparoscopy is performed when these tests do not deliver sufficient
information or insight for a diagnosis. The procedure may also be utilized to take a sample of tissue or
biopsy from a specific organ in the abdomen. In few operations, the surgeon can place the camera and the surgical tool through the same opening in the skin which means the less scarring. But it is riskier for the surgeon as the instruments are very close together.
