Uses Of Lipidomics
Lipidomics is a large-scale analysis of mechanisms and networks of cellular lipids in biological systems. The phrase 'lipidome' is used to define the total lipid profile inside a cell, tissue, organism or
environment and is a subset of the 'metabolome' and often involves the three other main groups of biological molecules: proteins/amino-acids, sugars and nucleic acids.
Lipidomics is a fairly recent area of study powered by rapid developments in technology such as
mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear
magnetic resonance ( NMR) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, dual polarization interferometry and analytical approaches, combined with awareness of the role of lipids in various metabolic disorders such as obesity, atherosclerosis, stroke, hypertension. This rapidly expanding field [4] complements the enormous progress made in
genomics and
proteomics, all of which form the family of biological systems. Research in
lipidomics involves identifying and quantifying the thousands of molecular cellular lipid
species and their interactions with other lipids, proteins and other metabolites.
Lipidomics scientists investigate the mechanisms, roles, relationships and dynamics of cellular lipids, as well as the modifications that arise during system disruption. A huge quantitative amount of
information explaining the spatial and temporal changes in the content and composition of different lipid molecular
species is collected in lipidomic research after a cell is disrupted by changes in its physiological or pathological environment.
Information gathered from these studies facilitates mechanistic insights into cellular function changes.
