Glycomics And Its Importance

The organized study of all the glycan structures of a given cell type or organism defines glycomics. The research area of glycomics deals with a characteristic level of intricacy which cannot be seen in other areas of applied biology. The 68 building blocks such as molecules for DNA, RNA and proteins, categories for lipids and the types of sugar linkages for saccharides affords the structural basis for molecular choreography. Grounded on ketoacyl and isoprene, lipids are alienated into eight categories. In order to know the importance of glycomics one should be aware of the different and important functions of glycans. Glycolipids and Glycoproteins which are found on the cell surface plays a serious role in bacterial and viral recognition and is completely restricted to microbiology because of the diverse role of glycans in bacterial physiology. Research in microbial glycomics leads to the development of novel drugs, bioactive glycans and glycoconjugate vaccines.
