Trigeminal Neuralgia Top Open Access Journals
Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a
model disorder of facial neuropathic pain. Formal classification of TN as
neuropathic pain based on the International Association for the Study of Pain grading system, however, is complicated by the need for objective signs confirming the somatosensory system 's underlying lesion or disease. The new edition of the Headache Disorders International Classification created similar difficulties by dropping the term symptomatic TN for symptoms caused by severe neurological illness, such as
tumors or multiple sclerosis. Such diagnostic problems obstruct the triage for diagnosis and clinical trials of TN patients. Diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is critically dependent on describing pathognomonic pain attacks by a patient. Although TN is a prototype of neuropathic pain, typical TN doesn't match the grading system for
neuropathic pain diagnostics. The grading system includes objective signs or tests for a definitive diagnosis that indicate an underlying lesion or disorder of the nervous system.
