Tactual Perception Online Journals

Tactual perception refers to each form of sensation related to touch, whether cutaneous (pressure, vibration, temperature), kinaesthetic (limbing motion) or proprioceptive (body position). Using those senses, we can acquire a wealth of information about the world around us. When handling objects this is most important. Information about the object's size , shape, weight , temperature and material is immediately available. This review article focuses on the latter type of data. The tactual sense gives us many aspects related to the nature of an object, most notably roughness, enforcement, coldness and slipperiness.A rough material may cause more extreme sensations when squeezed due to sharp points on the surface, creating an increased perception of the cutaneous force. This may have an effect on the understanding of compliance, making a rough substance harder to feel. But since the role of force signs in perception of compliance is very limited compared with surface deformation signals, this effect is expected to be very small.
