Sleep Paralysis

"Sleep paralysis is a condition in which a person is conscious but unable to move or speak while awaking or falling asleep. Someone can hallucinate during an episode (hear, smell, or see things that aren't there) which sometimes contributes to fear. Generally, episodes last less than a few minutes.  In fact, the sleep demon is a hallucination linked to sleep paralysis that occurs when a person is jolted awake in the middle of the dreaming phase of the sleep-related rapid eye movement ( REM). You wake up, but your subconscious is still dreaming — and it's bringing into the real world your dreams. Because your dreams may involve you moving and walking around, during REM your brain shuts down communication to your muscles, or dreaming, sleeping so you don't actually move and walk around when you should be in bed."
