Physical chemistry is one of the traditional sub-disciplines of chemistry and is concerned with the application of physical concepts and theories to the analysis of chemical properties and the reactive behavior of matter. Chemistry as a physical science is unique in interrogating and creating molecular structures. It illuminates and controls the molecular system through the design and development of tools to study the behavior of atoms and molecules. Through his focus on chemical structure energetics and transformation, he also provides a molecular foundation for all energy conversion technologies and the economic and social benefits they provide. It is located at the interface of chemistry and physics, as it draws on the principles of physics (in particular quantum mechanics) to take account of the phenomena of chemistry. It is also an essential component of the interpretation of investigation techniques and their results, in particular because these techniques are becoming increasingly sophisticated and because their full potential can only be realized with strong theoretical support. Physical chemistry also has an essential role to play in understanding the complex processes and molecules characteristic of biological systems and modern materials.
