Psychology  is that the scientific study of the mind and behavior, consistent with the American Psychological Association.  Structuralism relied on trained introspection, a search method whereby subjects related what was happening in their minds while performing a particular task. However, introspection proved to be an unreliable method because there was an excessive amount of individual variation within the experiences and reports of research subjects.  An American psychologist named James (1842-1910) developed an approach which came to be referred to as functionalism that disagreed with the main target of Structuralism. James argued that the mind is consistently changing and it's pointless to seem for the structure of conscious experience. Rather, he proposed the main target should get on how and why an organism does something, i.e. the functions or purpose of the brain. James suggested that psychologists should search for the underlying explanation for behaviour and therefore the mental processes involved.
