Perineural Invasion Impact Factor

PNI has been defined as cancer cell invasion in, around and through nerves or the finding of tumor cells within any of the the layers (epineurium, perineurium, endoneurium) of the nerve sheath. In the case where tumor cells are not found within the nerve sheath, PNI is defined as at least 33% of the circumference of the nerve surrounded by tumor cells, to differentiate this from focal abutment of tumor in the proximity of a nerve. The biologic mechanism of PNI pathogenesis isn't well understood, but a recent theory is that it relates to reciprocal signaling interactions and therefore the (acquired) capacity of tumor cells to respond to signals within the peripheral nerve, which promote invasion. Impact Factors are wont to measure the importance of a journal by calculating the amount of times selected articles are cited within the previous couple of years.
