Collagen is the most broadly disseminated class of proteins in the human body. In the field of
tissue engineering applications, the use of collagen-based
biomaterials has been diligently growing over the past decades. Multiple cross-linking methods were explored and various combinations with other
biopolymers were investigated in order to enhance tissue function. Collagen enchants a major advantage in being biocompatible, biodegradable, highly versatile and easily available. However, since collagen is a protein, it remains strenuous to sterilize without alterations to its structure. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the different applications of collagen-based
biomaterials developed for tissue engineering, focused at producing a functional material for use in
regenerative medicine from the laboratory bench to the patient bedside. Translational research in
molecular biology and
tissue engineering in the process of translation, replacing or regenerating human cells, organs or
tissues to establish or replace fundamental function.
