Obesity is a medical condition that has accumulated excess body fat to the extent that it can have adverse health effects. It is defined by the body mass index ( BMI) and further evaluated through the waist – hip ratio and total cardiovascular risk factors in terms of fat distribution. Food, insect stings, and medications are common causes of severe reactions. Their development is due to both genetic and environmental factors. The underlying mechanism involves immunoglobulin E antibodies (IgE), which are part of the body's immune system, binding to an allergen and then to a receptor on mast cells or basophiles where it triggers inflammatory chemicals such as histamine are released. Diagnosis is typically based on a person's medical history. Further skin or blood testing may be useful in some cases. Positive testing may not, however, mean that the substance in question has a significant allergy. The Obesity Journal covers the all relevant articles.
