Mucormycosis Infection Scholarly Journal

Mucormycosis Infection (previously called zygomycosis) is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycosis. These molds live throughout the environment. Mucormycosis mainly affects people that have health problems or take medicines that lower the body's ability to fight germs and sickness. Formally referred to as zygomycosis, this infection tends to occur most frequently if you've got weakened immunity from an illness or health condition. It’s important to get treatment. If left untreated, mucormycosis can be fatal. It presents itself as either a respiratory or a skin infection. Many different species of fungi can cause mucormycosis. They belong to a large group of molds called Mucorales. These molds include Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, and Mucor. Mucormycosis can affect the lungs (pulmonary mucormycosis), most frequently when the spores are breathed in and reach the systema respiratorium. Pulmonary mucormycosis is usually a rapidly progressive disease characterized by fever and a cough that does produce any mucous (nonproductive cough). Less often, spitting or coughing up of blood (hemoptysis), chest pain, and difficulty breathing (dyspnea) will occur. Some individuals with diabetes could also be in danger of developing mucormycosis, especially if their diabetes is poorly controlled and that they develop diabetic ketoacidosis. Mucormycosis can also occur in patients with no predisposing factors.
