Metabolic Syndrome In Older Patients
Metabolic
syndrome (MS) is an aggregation of risk factors that increase the incidence of mellitus and
cardiovascular events. Metabolic
syndrome predominance is increasing worldwide, especially among the elderly. Elderly people are at elevated risk of developing intra-abdominal
obesity and metabolic syndrome, like non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, due to various age-related physiological mechanisms. Metabolic
syndrome includes obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and
hypertension resulting in increased risk of
cardiovascular disease (CVD) and renal events. The
metabolic syndrome should be emphasized in the healthcare sectors, researchers, and clinicians with the potential population dynamics. Older patients and the
health care system will likely experience an epidemic of the
metabolic syndrome and the associated CVD without proactive and preventive efforts.
