Lumbar Spine Online Journals

The spine's lumbar portion, more generally known as the lower back, is composed of five vertebrae numbered L1 through L5. The lumbar region is located in between thoracic area of the spine, or chest, and the sacrum. Generally, the lumbar spine has a strong inwards curve identified as lordosis. The lower area of the back contains large muscles that support the back and cause the body to move in the trunk. These muscles, that is a common cause of lower back pain, can spasm or become strained. The lumbar spine's five vertebrae are linked by facet joints in the back, which enable for forward and backward extension and also twisting body movement. In the lumbar spine, the two lowest segments, L5-S1 and L4-L5, hold the most weight and have the most mobility, making the area susceptible to injury. The nerve roots may be compressed by certain lower back conditions , resulting in discomfort that radiates to the lower extremities, termed radiculopathy.
