Low Back Pain Among Drivers

Low back pain is one of the drivers' most common medical complaints. Among truck drivers, back pain is 2-4 times more common than in the general population. Causes of this back pain include long seating times, unpleasant posture, exposure of the whole body to vibration, lifting and carrying of materials and improperly fitting or uneasy sitting. Whole body vibration was extensively studied in truck drivers due to low back pain. EU drivers have legislation specifically limiting their exposure to entire body vibration during and at full speed, but in the US drivers do not have similar restrictions. The mood and fatigue of patients with episodic low back pain were analyzed in a relevant 1987 study. They find that states of mood do not predict the onset of pain but tiredness has been about 24 hours after the onset of pain. So the low back pain was a predictor of tiredness according to their work. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) has measured low back pain. The Brief Fatigue Inventory has measured fatigue. The correlation between LBP and fatigue was quantified by multiple linear regression ( MLR).
