Finance – Innovations

The act of creating new financial instruments, as well as new financial technologies, institutions and markets is financial innovation. Current finance developments involve hedge funds, private equity, risk instruments, retail-structured goods, multi-family offices, exchange-traded funds. A range of financial innovations has been spawned by the shadow banking system including mortgage-backed securities products and collateralized debt obligations. Innovation has three aspects: institutional, product, and process. Institutional innovations contribute to the emergence of various categories of financial institutions such as specialty credit card companies such as Capital One, online investment networks such as Charles Schwab Company and direct banks. New product innovations such as derivatives, securitization, and foreign currency mortgages are related to financial creativity. Innovations in the process apply to new ways of doing business, including internet banking and mobile banking.
