Aquaculture also known as fish or shellfish farming refers to
plant and animal breeding, rearing and harvesting in all kinds of water surroundings including pools, rivers, lakes and oceans. Researchers and aquaculture producers are "farming" fish, shellfish and plants of all kinds of freshwater and marine species. Food fish, sport fish, bait fish, ornamental fish, crustaceans, molluscs, algae, sea vegetables and fish eggs are formed in aquaculture. Aquaculture includes the production of seafood from hatchery fish and shellfish which is grown in ponds, tanks, cages, or raceways to market size.
Stock restoration or "enhancement" is an aquaculture form in which hatchery and shellfish are released into the aquaculture wild to rebuild coastal habitats such as oyster reefs.
