Genome-wide association studies have facilitated a substantial and rapid rise in the number of confirmed susceptibility variants for Type 2 diabetes. This has inevitably led to widespread hope that these findings will translate into improved clinical care for the growing numbers of patients with diabetes. This article summarizes recent discoveries in the field of Type 2 diabetes genetics and will discuss their importance and the current obstacles to clinical translation.
