Tourette Syndrome
Tourette (too-RET)
syndrome is an uncontrollable disorder that involves repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics). You might blink your eyes repeatedly, shrug your shoulders, or blur out unusual sounds or offensive words, for example. Tics usually show up between the ages of 2 and 15, with an average age of around 6. Males are about three to four times more likely to develop a Tourette
syndrome than females. Although the Tourette
syndrome does not get cured, treatments are available. Many people with Tourette
syndrome need no treatment if symptoms aren't troubling. After teen years tics frequently decrease or become regulated.
