Temporomandibular Disorders Top Journals

The temporomandibular joint or TMJ acts as a sliding character which connects your jawbone to your skull. Dysfunction may be causing pain and discomfort. TMD affects up to 15 percent of adults, with peak incidence at age 20-40. TMD is intra-articular or extra-articular. Common symptoms include pain or dysfunction in the jaw, earache, headache and pain in the face. TMD etiology is multifactorial, with biological, environmental , social, emotional , and cognitive triggers. Most often, diagnosis is based on the history and physical examination. Diagnostic imaging can be useful in cases of suspected malocclusion or intra-articular anomalies.  For refractory cases reference is indicated to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
