Journal impact factor provides a quantitative evaluation tool for the grading, evaluation, sorting, and comparison of similar journals. It reflects the average number of citations to recent articles published in science and social science journals in a given year or period, and is often used as a proxy for a journal's relative importance within its field. It is first devised by the Institute for Scientific Information founder, Eugene Garfield. A journal's impact factor is assessed by dividing the number of current year citations into the source items that were published in that journal over the previous two years.
