Myco-logy

Mycology is the biological branch concerned with the study of fungi, including their genetic and biochemical properties, their taxonomy and their application to humans as a source of tinder, herbal medicine , food and natural substances, as well as their dangers such as toxicity and infection. A biologist who specializes in mycology is a mycologist. Mycology branches into the field of phytopathology, plant disease study and the two disciplines remain closely linked because the vast majority of plant pathogens are fungi. The toxins, antibiotics and other secondary metabolites are produced by many fungi. Fungi are central to life on Earth in their function as symbionts, fungi and other species historically known as fungi, such as oomycetes and myxomycetes (slime molds), are also of economic and social significance, as some cause animal diseases (such as histoplasmosis) as well as plant diseases.
