Mucins In Gastric Cancer

Mucins are key components of the stomach mucosal barrier, which protects epithelia from chronic inflammatory carcinogenic effects. Analysis of the Cancer Genome Atlas database showed that mucin-17 (MUC17) was more highly expressed in specimens of gastric cancer (GC), with a patient-friendly prognosis. The process of neoplastic transformation in the stomach has been reported to be associated with decreased expression of normal mucins in the gastric mucosa and denovo expression of mucins normally expressed in other organisms. This association can be used as a means to bring new insights into the biological behavior and genetic pathways in the development of gastric cancer. There are controversial reports of differences in genetic pathways and stomach cancer behavior compared to older patients in younger patients.MUC17 was induced by CDX1upregulation of inflammatory cytokines in GC cells. MUC17 thus inactivated NFÿB in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines inhibiting the proliferation of GC cells. Our study shows that MUC17 is a GC suppressor protein that has the therapeutic potential for expression of human antigen GC.MUC2 is a prognostic factor associated with a favorable outcome in patients. Additionally, a combined MUC1 and MUC2 mucin staining assessment are clinically useful for predicting outcome in patients with gastric cancer.
