Mortierella Sp

Mortierella species are soil fungi falling within the Mortierellomycotina subphylum (phylum: Mucoromycota) order of Mortierellales. There are about 85 species within the widespread genus. Mortonella sp. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as GLA and AA, have been known to be produced under normal medium growing conditions. Likewise this fungus develops EPA and DHA in their mycelial biomass under the stress situation. Mortierella fungi are usually coenocytic but they have a greater tendency towards septum formation compared with the genus Mucor (Mucoromycotina, Mucorales). The mitosporangia are usually smaller especially in comparison with Mucor-like fungi, containing fewer spores and lacking a columella. Many fungi similar to Mortierella are asexual. When zygospores are found, however, they are strongly similar to Mucor-zygospores. Sexual constructs often get embedded in poorly organized hypha networks.
