 Membrane proteins are popular and scientifically important — about one-third of all human proteins are membrane proteins, and more than half of all medications are targets. Nonetheless, compared to Other protein classes, the determination of membrane protein structures remains largely a challenge due to the difficulty of establishing experimental conditions that can preserve the correct protein conformation insulated from its native environment. Biological membranes consist of a continuous double layer of lipid molecules which contain membrane proteins.
