Humanity is a virtue linked to the fundamental ethics of altruism derived from the human condition. It also symbolizes human love and mutual compassion. Humanity differs from pure justice in that there is a degree of altruism towards people included in humanity more so than the equality contained in law. That is, morality, and the acts of compassion, altruism, and social wisdom are usually individual virtues, while justice is commonly applied to all. Humanity can be classed as one of six consistent virtues across all cultures. While only a relatively new area of investigation for psychological researchers, character strengths and virtues were consistently measured in psychometric surveys and shown to be positively linked to psychological and subjective well-being. Moreover, also for those who advocate a spiritual / theistic outlook, these salutary connections seem to be clarified best by humanity / civility rather than promoting a faith in a supernatural being.
