Astrophysics is the branch of astronomy that employs
physics and
chemistry principles to determine the nature of astronomical objects, rather than their positions or movements in space. The Earth, other stars, galaxies, extrasolar planets, the interstellar medium and the cosmic microwave background are among the
phenomena studied there.
Astrophysics is the
physics of stars in the universe, and other distant bodies, but it also hits near home. The first stars had been almost entirely hydrogen, according to the Big Bang Theory. The nuclear fusion process which energizes them smashes hydrogen
atoms together to form the heavier element helium. Observational astronomy is a division of astronomical science concerned with data recording and interpretation, as opposed to the theoretical astrophysics, which is mainly concerned with finding out the measurable implications of physical models. It is the practice of using telescopes and other astronomical apparatus to observe celestial objects. Most astrophysical observations are performed using the electromagnetic spectrum.
