A
communication disorder is impairment within the ability to receive, send, process, and comprehend concepts or verbal, nonverbal and character systems. A
communication disorder could also be evident within the processes of hearing, language, and/or speech. A
communication disorder may home in severity from mild to profound. It may be developmental or acquired. Individuals may demonstrate one or any combination of communication disorders. A
communication disorder may end in a primary disability or it's going to be secondary to other disabilities.
A speech defect is an impairment of the articulation of speech sounds, fluency and/or voice.
An articulation disorder is that the atypical production of speech sounds characterized by substitutions, omissions, additions or distortions which will interfere with intelligibility.
A fluency disorder is a disruption within the flow of speaking characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and repetitions in sounds, syllables, words, and phrases.
Many disorders can affect our ability to speak and communicate. They range from saying sounds incorrectly to being completely unable to speak or understand speech. Causes include
Hearing disorders and deafness
· Voice problems, such as dysphonia or those caused by cleft lip or palate
· Speech problems like stuttering
· Developmental disabilities
· Learning disabilities
·
Autism spectrum disorder
·
Brain injury
