Child-Mood-Disorders

Problems of mental health ranging from depression to bipolar disorder are called mood disorders, or affective disorders. A serious change in mood in any of these disorders forms the emotional state of your child. Unlike a normal bad mood that a child occasionally feels, a mood disorder involves intense, hard to manage and persistent thoughts and feelings. A mood disorder is a serious medical problem, and not something that a child will simply "get over" on its own. Clinicians and researchers today believe that children's mood disorders remain one of the most under-diagnosed health issues. Mood disorders that go undiagnosed can put children at risk for other conditions, such as disruptive behavior and substance use disorders, which remain after the mood disorder has been treated. Children and adolescents with a mood disorder do not always experience the same symptoms as adults. So it can be difficult for parents to identify a problem in their child , particularly because their thoughts or feelings may not be easy to express.
