Biochemistry is the study of the structure and function of biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids. Biochemistry is also used to describe techniques suited to understanding the interactions and functions of biological molecules, including traditional techniques such as Western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, and chromatography methods. At its most elementary , biochemistry is that the study of the chemical processes occurring in living matter. A few samples of work currently being performed include improvements within the efficiency of photosynthesis to extend crop yields, bioremediation of polluted soils, development of latest feed-stocks, chemistries for the production of biofuels, and genetic mapping of ecosystems to watch biodiversity, and methodologies for enhancing biological capture of carbon. These and other biochemical technologies may play an important role in our efforts to seek out a sustainable means of living. Many other, less obvious, aspects of our society also are being altered and improved by biochemical research. Industry is being transformed as biological chemistry is getting used to get new materials with novel properties or to enhance the efficiency of older processes. Law enforcement increasingly relies on biochemistry-based forensics to provide evidence in investigations. Archaeology is more rapidly advancing as genetic and isotopic investigations of our ancestral remains are illuminating much of human history and pre-history.
