Biochemical engineering is the use of biological (natural or organic) materials for the development of products and processes, such as organisms, cells, and certain molecules. Biotechnology, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, water purification and food are industries which depend on biochemical engineering. They use biochemical engineering to investigate, develop and produce materials and products that benefit society or the well-being of people. The resulting products often consist of a combination of organic materials and laboratory-produced materials. Biochemical engineers use advanced technology and their knowledge of engineering, biology and chemistry to create new products from biological materials and manufacturing processes. They often work in a laboratory with scientists and other engineers to test interactions among materials to develop product ideas.
