Affinity chromatography is unique in purification technology as it is the only technique that allows a biomolecule to be purified based on its biological function or individual chemical structure. With affinity chromatography, purification that would otherwise be time-consuming , difficult or even impossible to use other techniques can often be easily achieved. The technique can be used to separate active biomolecules from denatured or functionally different forms, to isolate pure substances in large volumes of crude sample present at low concentrations, and also to remove specific contaminants.
