Endocrinology is the study of hormones.
Hormones are essential for our every-day survival.
Hormones control our temperature, sleep, mood, stress, growth and more. They are found in all organisms with more than one cell, and so they are found in plants and animals. They control a good range of physiological activities, like growth, development, puberty, level of alertness, sugar regulation and appetite, bone growth, etc. The system may be a complex collection of hormone-producing glands that control basic body functions like metabolism, growth, and sexual development. We can also find that problems with
hormones and therefore the way they work contribute to a number of the main diseases of mankind; for instance , diabetes, Pediatric endocrinology, looking at
hormones in children. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals, where chemicals which mimic the effects of
hormones are present in the environment. Comparative endocrinology, which looks at the way similar
hormones add different species. The diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases are guided by laboratory tests to a greater extent than for many specialties. Many diseases are investigated through excitation/stimulation or inhibition/suppression testing. This might involve injection with an interesting agent to check the function of an endocrine organ. Blood is then sampled to assess the changes of the relevant
hormones or metabolites. An endocrinologist needs extensive knowledge of clinical
chemistry and
biochemistry to know the uses and limitations of the investigations.
