Synthetic biology is a new interdisciplinary area, involving the application of the principles of engineering to biology. It aims at (re-)designing and manufacturing biological components and systems not already existing in the natural world. Synthetic biology combines chemical DNA synthesis with increasing genomics knowledge to allow researchers to quickly manufacture and assemble cataloged DNA sequences into new genomes. Processes biology studies complex natural biological systems as interconnected wholes using modeling methods, simulation techniques and experiment comparison. Synthetic biology explores how artificial biological structures can be built using the same methods and experimental techniques as others. The emphasis is always on taking parts of, characterizing and simplifying natural biological systems and using them as components of an engineered biological system.
