Streptococcus Pneumonia

Pneumococcal disease or infection is responsible for more infant deaths worldwide, every year. During influenza epidemics, Streptococcus pneumoniae is associated with higher mortality in patients infected with both microorganisms. It is thought that Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilius influenzae have a synergistic effect on one another, when infecting the same host. Pneumococcal disease occurs across the world but is more common in low and middle income countries where less people get pneumococcal vaccine. In more temperate climates, this disease is more communal during winter and early spring. In tropical climates with dry and rainy seasons, pneumococcal disease tends to occur more in the dry season. Also, travelers are more likely to get pneumococcal disease if they spend time in crowded settings or in close contact with children in countries where pneumococcal vaccine is not regularly used.
