Pharmacognosy Impact Factor
Pharmacognosy is the study of medicinal products or raw
drugs produced from natural sources such as plants, microbes and animals. This involves study of its biological, mechanical, biochemical and physical properties. The human body is believed to find plant-derived medicinal products easier to accept due to the fact that they exist in nature and are not synthetic. Plants and organisms are used in the production of conventional and alternative medicinal products in a variety of ways. The plant's beneficial active ingredient can be found anywhere within its physical structure, such as in a flower's petal or stem. With its normal physical state, the natural product can be inactive, meaning that it can require a chemical reaction or alteration to turn it into its active form. The active ingredient is sometimes extracted directly from the plant, but on other occasions the active ingredient can be produced through synthesis by creating a compound which is similar to the
plant extract.
