Osteomyelitis Review Articles

Osteomyelitis is an inflammation of the bones. It is caused by microorganisms that invade the bone, and the microorganisms may spread from surrounding tissue to the bone via the blood stream or infection. It is a rare disease but can get severe because it can spread through bloodstream to other parts of the body. Osteomyelitis in children generally infect longer leg and upper arm bones. The infection can also occur due to some bone surgery where the metal rods are inserted in the bones. People with poor immune systems are at greater risk of developing osteomyelitis because the microorganisms can quickly penetrate the bloodstream and invade the bones. Osteomyelitis signs include fever, discomfort, rashes or redness and infectional swelling. There are different medical approaches for diagnosing osteomyelitis, such as bone scan, bone x-ray, and bone MRI. There are various treatments for osteomyelitis such as antibiotics that kill the microorganism-causing infection, or if the infection is severe then the dead bone is removed so it does not infect the surrounding tissues.
