Open-Raceway-Ponds

Open raceway ponds are a shallow pond used for the growth of algae to produce nutritional supplement and treat wastewater. In recent times many companies have started to produce bio-fuels and chemicals from the algae. Normally such pond are one foot in depth and range in size from one acre to several acres .The algae which grow in these ponds are exposed to the sun radiation which help in conversion to produce the biomass. These ponds resemble a race way and have a paddle wheel for the movement of water and to circulate the algae. The harvesting of the algae from the ponds is of two stages and depend on the properties of the algae and requirement of the end product. Mostly a fraction of the pond is harvested and biomass is concentrated. This biomass is then processed to extract oil for production of biodiesel. The residual material is dried and used as animal feed. Such ponds are also used for the treatment of waste water to remove lead and to produce nutritional supplements like spirulina.
