Kinetic Study Journals
A kinetic analysis revealed that the termination reaction of polymerizations performed in solution follows kinetics of the first order, which suggests that under the conditions used the reaction occurs between the aziridinium group and an amino structure of its own polymer chain forming a macrocyclic ammonium end-group. Kinetics may be viewed either as a science in its own right or as an tool for elucidating the mechanism in reaction. The aim of the present chapter is to discuss some basic practical kinetic techniques which are useful in the diagnosis of reaction mechanism. Using kinetic techniques to investigate the reaction process, it is usually more useful to obtain five constants of the rate with an accuracy of ± 5% than one constant with an accuracy of ± 1%. Experimental data obtained over a wide range of conditions often require a straightforward demonstration of a variable 's impact on the reaction rate and often show some unexpected result leading to significant mechanistic conclusions.
