Industrial Crop

Industrial crops, also known as non-food crops, are plants grown for the production of goods such as clothing fibres and not food for consumption. Industrial plant is the name of a company that wants to increase income in the agricultural sector and provide economic activity for rural development. Industrial plants also try to provide products that can be used as a substitute for imports from other countries. The range of non-food crops is broad, but includes traditional crops such as wheat and less conventional crops such as hemp and miscanthus. Products from non-food plants can be categorized based on functions such as fibre, medicine, renewable biopolymers and specialty chemicals. Cassava is an important industrial crop in many countries. Special cases where prices can be distorted by monopolies or oligopolies are industrial plants such as cotton and sugar, which have economies of scale in processing. Sugar cane is mainly an industrial plant that is used as a raw material for the sugar industry.
