Gluten Ataxia

Gluten ataxia is an autoimmune disorder in which the antibodies released by mistake when digesting a part of the brain that attacks gluten. Gluten ataxia is an immune-mediated disease triggered by gluten ingestion in people who are genetically susceptible. It should be considered on all patients with idiopathic sporadic ataxia in the differential diagnosis. Early diagnosis and gluten-free diet therapy may boost ataxia and avoid its progression. Gluten ataxia markers which are readily available and sensitive include antigliadin antibodies. IgA deposits in the small intestine and at extraintestinal sites against TG2 prove to be additional reliable and perhaps more specific markers of the entire spectrum of gluten sensitivity. They can hold the key to their pathogenesis too.
