The epiglottis is a cartilage flap situated behind the tongue and in front of the larynx, in the throat. Usually, the epiglottis is upright at rest allowing air to pass through the larynx and the lungs. When a person swallows the epiglottis folds backward to cover the larynx 's entrance so that food and fluid do not penetrate the windpipe and lungs.
