Ecosystem-Innovations

Ecosystem innovations can be a population of living organisms, interacting as a network in accordance with the non-living components of its environment. Through the nutrient cycles and energy flows these biotic and abiotic components are linked together. Through photosynthesis, energy enters the system and is incorporated into the plant part. Animals play a key role in the movement of matter and energy through the system by feeding on plants and on each other. They also affect the amount of the biomass present in plants and microbials. Through breaking up dead organic matter, decomposers release carbon back into the environment and promote the processing of nutrients through transforming nutrients contained in dead biomass back into a shape that can be readily employed by plants and other microbes.
