Computational Social Science

Computational Social Sciences refers to academic sub-disciplines related to computer-aided social science approaches. This means that computers are used to model, simulate and analyze social phenomena. These areas include computer economics, computer sociology, cliodynamics, cultural studies and automatic content analysis in social and traditional media. The focus is on the study of social relations and behavior and interactions through social simulations, modeling, network analysis and media analysis. Computer-aided social science is revolutionizing the fundamental foundations of the scientific method: empirical research, especially through big data, through digital trace analysis left by online social activities; and scientific theory, especially by building computer simulation models through social simulations. This is a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to social research that focuses on information processing using modern information technology. Computer tasks include analyzing social networks, social geographical systems, social media content, and traditional media content. Work in computer science is increasingly based on increasing the availability of large databases, which are currently being created and managed by a number of interdisciplinary projects.
