It has been suggested that if aircraft technology had advanced at an equivalent rate as that of technology , it might be possible to urge on a Boeing 747 that would be large enough to hold 12,000 people to the moon in about three hours for the round-trip cost of about twelve dollars. Computer technology, particularly within the areas of increased speed of calculations and more efficient memory storage devices, has improved at a whirlwind pace over the past 20 years. Many of the improvements in hardware and within the algorithms (software) that control computers have presented a replacement tool for investigating scientific problems. Scientific research are often categorized in three areas: observational science, experimental science, theoretical science. A fourth and new area of research project has emerged over the past 20 or 30 years that is revolutionizing how scientists work and the way they believe doing science. Computational science is that the application of computational and numerical techniques to unravel large and sophisticated problems. A collection of problems and solutions in computational science are often found in Steeb, Hardy, Hardy and Stoop. Philosophers of science addressed the question to what degree computational science qualifies as science, among them Humphreysand Gelfert. They address the overall question of epistemology: how can we gain insight from such computational science approaches. Tolk uses these insights to point out the epistemological constraints of computer-based simulation research. While simulation and computational science are our most sophisticated thanks to express our knowledge and understanding, they also accompany all constraints and limits already known for computational solutions.
