Cell Wall Online Journals
The
cell membrane is that the protective, semi-permeable outer layer of a
plant cell. A major function of the
cell membrane is to offer the cell strength and structure, and to filter
molecules that pass in and out of the cell. A
cell membrane may be a fairly rigid layer surrounding a cell located outside of the
cell wall that gives additional support and protection. They are found in bacteria, archaea, fungi, plants, and algae. The main functions of the
cell membrane are to supply structure, support, and protection for the cell. The
cell membrane in plants consists mainly of cellulose and contains three layers in many plants. The three layers are the center lamella, voltaic cell wall, and storage cell wall. A virus particle does not have cell wall. It has a protein coat that encases the macromolecule (DNA or RNA). A virus particle cannot reproduce by itself, as it does not have ribosomes and cannot synthesize energy. A
cell membrane isn't an impenetrable fortress round the delicate
plant cell. There are small holes, called plasmodesmata, within the cell walls between
plant cells. The cell membranes of neighboring
cells are ready to connect through these holes. The connections allow the transfer of nutrients, waste, and ions.
Molecules also can undergo the spaces within the cell walls, avoiding the
cells completely.
