Cell Wall

The mechanical layer that surrounds some types of cells just outside the plasma membrane is known as a cell wall. The cell wall is flexible, tough and also sometimes rigid and offers the cell with both structural, mechanical support and protection and also acts as a filtering mechanism. Cell wall is absent in animals and present in most prokaryotes such as algae, fungi and eukaryotes including plants and its exception includes in mollicute bacteria. The major function of the cell wall is to prevent the over-expansion of the cell when water enters. The composition and arrangement of cell walls varies between species and it depends on the type of the cell and its developmental stage.
