Biochemistry, the study of chemicals and the processes that occur in plants, animals and microorganisms, and the changes they experience during development and life. He deals with the chemistry of life and thus refers to analytical, organic and physical chemical techniques as well as those of physiologists who deal with the molecular basis of life processes. All chemical changes in the body - either the breakdown of substances, usually to get the energy needed, or the accumulation of complex molecules needed for life processes - are called general metabolism. These chemical changes depend on the action of organic catalysts known as enzymes, and enzymes in turn depend on their presence in the genetic machinery of cells. It is therefore not surprising that biochemistry was included in studies of chemical changes in disease, the effects of drugs and other aspects of medicine, as well as in the fields of nutrition, genetics and agriculture. The term biochemistry stands for two rather older concepts: physiological chemistry and biological chemistry. The biochemical aspects related to chemistry and the function of very large molecules (eg. protein and nucleic acids) are often summarized in terms of molecular biology. Clarifying the chemical transformation of these compounds in living cells is a major problem in biochemistry.
