Aging And Immunization Open Access Articles

Vaccines are important particularly for older adults. Your immune system weakens when you get older and it can be harder to fight off infections. You are more likely to develop illnesses such as measles, pneumonia, and shingles — and complications that can lead to long-term illness, hospitalization, and even death. Elderly people are more prone to severe infections and less responsive to vaccination prevention, due to immunosenescence combined with a progressive increase in the characteristic pro inflammatory status of the aging process (inflammation). Such factors are responsible for the majority of age-related diseases, which correlate with low vaccine response. One may think of the immune system as a dynamic network of different interacting components. Recently, a cellular automaton, identified in shape space, has been shown to exhibit self-regulation and complex actions, thus being a good candidate for modeling the immune system.
